DANA BACKES began her dance training in Colorado Springs, Colorado at Springs City Ballet. She graduated in 2011 from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ballet and a Minor in Business, where she had the privilege of being a member of Utah Ballet. During this time she studied Teaching, Character, Jazz, Ballet History, Kinesiology and Physics for Dancers, as well as Ballet, Pointe and Variations. She performed both soloist and corps de ballet roles, and worked with guest choreographers Rick Tija, Eddie Toussaint, Jiang Qi, and Bruce Caldwell. As a member of Utah Ballet she traveled to Berlin, Germany and took classes at the Berlin State Ballet School. While in college, Dana substitute taught at many studios around Salt Lake City. She began teaching at the Academy of Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre in fall of 2012. Stemming from her own training, her teaching style begins with a strong ballet technique. She believes in teaching dancers a strong and healthy technique, while encouraging their artistry. Dana is excited to be working at the Academy of Hancock Dance Theatre and to share her passion for dance.
